iPhone Hacking

iPhone - Springboard

Finally got around to hacking my iPhone today. Following the instructions was pretty easy, finding them proved to be only slightly frustrating.

I Started off at Lights Off, with their instructions. The first link is directly to the Wiki, where there is a lot of good information, but if you are in a hurry, you can skip straight to installing software.

Downloads

Unpack everything

I created a folder iPhone in my home directory and extracted everything there. I also created the folder iPhone/Applications to store apps that I want to install to the phone.

Installation

Once you’ve downloaded everything, run iActivator, and jailbreak your phone. This will allow you to write to your phone’s filesystem.

Navigate to the folder under Terminal. Type ./iPhoneMacSSHInstall.sh

Upload

From your ~/iPhone/Applications/ directory (in terminal, again) run
scp -rp "APPLICATION.app" root@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:/Applications
where APPLICATION.app is the name of the application you wish to install (in this case, Lights Off.app) and XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is your iPhone’s IP address. The default ssh password is dottie.

Note: The use of quotes around the application name allows you to upload apps with spaces in their filenames.

Wrapping it up

You can install any applications using the above command, as long as your iPhone is out of jail. You must reboot your phone after every app install to reset the springboard.

I highly recommend changing the default password, which I will cover in the next post.
